Gangwon in the Early Modern

Joseon in Early Modern Times and the Korean Empire: Culture in the Gangwon Landscape

The scholars of Joseon sought self-cultivation and contemplated the principles of Neo-Confucianism as they roamed the beautiful natural environment of the Gangwon-do area, including Mt. Geumgangsan and the eight views of Gwandong. They left records of the places that they traveled in the form of artworks and literature. The royal household also had close connections with Gangwon and votive temples where members of the royal family came to pray were built in the area. From1395 when the name " Gangwon-do" was first used, the Yeongseo region with its leisurely waterways and steep mountains, and the Yeongdong region, connected along the east coast, each developed a unique culture according to its natural environment. Yeongdong in particular also functioned as an advance point for defense of the coastal area. It was in Gangwon-do that the righteous armies who fought against the Japanese in the Korean Empire period rose up.
